Press Night - "A Provincial Life"
My first Press Night as an official critic – no pay, but
free ticket and free drink, which almost adds up to the minimum wage for an
evening’s work. The play is “A Provincial Life” by National Theatre Wales, at Sherman Cymru, Cardiff; by Peter Gill, after
Anton Chekhov - I even prepared by downloading and reading the novella on which
it is based a few weeks ago. Bumped into a couple of old friends in the lobby,
and spotted veteran actress Sian Phillips, as well as the writer-director
himself. As for the play itself, my full review is reserved for the British Theatre Guide online,
although it does include the phrase “constantly intriguing”.
